    Love, Simon


    Third time I've watched this film. There are some weaknesses in the script but the performances are strong. Nick Robinson plays this with the honesty of a teenager...not a gay teenager with affectations but as a teenager comfortable with his sexuality but uncomfortable being open about it. There are some plot devices that are a bit obvious but it's the performances and intelligent dialogue that lets this film work as a whole.

    I've no idea why the blurb about 1789 refers to it as a documentary about a stage play. It is no more a documentary than is any filming of a live performance of an opera or ballet. Filmed over the last 13 performances of this brilliant piece of theatre, the film reveals the performers and their audience joining to experience the French Revolution in a circus-like setting.     This film should be required viewing for every schoolchild in the world. That this film is not available on DVD in the U.S. is a travesty.

    Intriguing concept that stays honest to itself. Devon Graye gives a performance that moves from being slightly stylized to brilliantly honest in keeping with his character. Tuc Watkins plays one note very well. Not sure if that was the director's choice or not. It fits the script but isn't nuanced. The film holds together quite well with good dialogue and cinematography.
