One time I met Xavier Samuels. He said Hi and i said Good, thanks.
Given it's a Marvel film it cannot escape the gravitational pull of rote exposition-heavy dialogue, but in terms of design work and execution, there's nothing like it in the Marvel canon (although some judicious editing would make this a leaner, more enjoyable picture).
It's great to see representation like this, and it avoids reductive appropriation entirely by having black voices tell a black story full of joy, ambition and humour. The interplay of technology, spirituality and tradition seems so effortless…
Wonderfully clear-eyed about its cultural and filmic heritage.
Admirably contained ticking-clock plot device.
The best summation of the Force and its followers since EMPIRE.
Beautifully designed, with some colour choices that Argento would blush at.
The funniest in the saga.
