Zemeckis’s love of new tech and old-fashioned storytelling find their perfect synthesis here. It’s simply stunning to see a film this intelligent, this willing to argue for science while also acknowledging its limits and the comforts and limits of religion. There’s also a deep humanism, a touching, clear-eyed idealism in this film. And most of that is expressed through Jodie Foster’s performance. Foster is my favorite actress, and her performance as Ellie Arroway may be her crowning achievement. Layering strength…
