• Judy & Punch

    Judy & Punch

Feels a bit like a extra-bloody episode of Doctor Who by way of lesser Gilliam. Enjoyable enough if you like that sort of thing, though.

  • The Personal History of David Copperfield

The Personal History of David Copperfield

Eccentric, warm, utterly charming and affecting by the end. I am two glasses of red wine into the election coverage so it is exactly what I needed.

  • Mama

Chastain is good, because of course she is. The child actors are as well, especially the one playing Victoria, but the rest of it is convoluted plot, obvious music cues, wall to wall cliches from the last two decades of horror movies, plus some cgi that gets way too much screen time. It all feels a bit silly by the end.

  • The Woman in Black

    The Woman in Black

Properly spooky, everyone is good in it, and it looks great (except maybe the makeup effects). Not blazing any trails but if you want a lights-out Victorian ghost story for Halloween, you could do a lot worse.

  • Ghost Stories

    Ghost Stories

This movie needed to decide what it was, instead it tried to be everything and landed flat. First story has some spooky bits, second approaches fun nuttiness, but it all disappears up itself after that.

  • Hairspray

    Exactly what I needed.

  • Margot at the Wedding

    Margot at the Wedding

Not for me, maybe of it was just the adults but with the kids in the mix it just made me depressed. Kidman is great of course, and it’s always good to see Jennifer Jason Leigh.

  • Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga

Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga

    Basically exactly what I wanted.

  • The Lovebirds

    The Lovebirds

Gets a little wobbly at resolution but generally lots of fun watching those two do their thing.

  • Just Like Heaven

    Just Like Heaven

    Should work, doesn’t really.

  • Dark City

    Dark City

Stood up better than I had hoped, good cast, great design, cool premise. A bit let down by the directing and writing, but still worth a look.

  • Florence Foster Jenkins

    Florence Foster Jenkins

Much like its protagonist; sweet, well-meaning, and likable but needed lots more something or a bit less of something else.
