Mulholland Drive is a film that constantly subverts expectations, even for those who've seen it before. If you google "Mulholland Drive analysis" you'll find a bunch of different results of different people writing the same basic interpretation of the plot. Just remarkable and endlessly fascinating.
Weaves a pastiche of emotions and feelings I'm variety from scene to scene ranging from disgusting, to comedic, to poignant, to saddening, to just plain interesting.
Individual scenes can be easily followed and scenes throughout the movie seem to connect in several interweaving stories and ideas, but finding a narrative throughline for the whole film would be difficult. But it isn't frustratingly convoluted. It's very stream of conciousness.
It's overtly unpleasant without feeling uncomfortable or depressing. It's just creative. I loved every second of it, and can't wait to try and decipher it more and more on future viewings.
