Escape from New York

Escape from New York ★★★★

More like Escape TO New York as it's the atmosphere and full blown fantasy elements that keep me coming back. Like Snake, we're just visiting. For the prisoners it's a circle of hell. I never made sense of the lyrics sung by the costumed prisoners on a Broadway stage, but the captions I put on revealed a parody of the underworld, funny and fitting.

This is Carpenter's third film about outta-control criminals, which makes sense considering the rise of crime in the '60s and '70s (continuing into the '90s). He's got that spooky touch, hordes of goons breaking up through floors for extra effect, as done in ASSAULT ON PRECINCT 13 and implied in HALLOWEEN.

Love Ernest Borgnine here. Sad end. The screen graphics and maps are to be adored. Barbeau and Stanton having fun. She can't live without him---but could he live without her?
