    To-Watch List (2018 Edition) Film 28 of 115

One of the best memories I have of growing up with film was first realizing how awesome Ocean’s Eleven was. The tension in the capers, the whip-smart dialogue and humor, the stylish yet lovable goofballs that were the main characters. But above all else, the amount of craft, of Direction-with-a-capital-D on display that made the whole thing come together to be so…damn cool. Steven Soderbergh was one of the first people who,…

On a rewatch, still one of the best movies of the year, and it's a shame audiences have slept on it so much.

Sickeningly funny. Gorgeous to look at. Standout shots: Reynolds and Alma in the car at night. The New Year’s Party. Reynolds vs. the Alps. Alma staring at the last mushroom. Jonny Greenwood’s score is a luscious tidal wave of strings. But I never once expected I’d see a Daniel Day-Lewis/Paul Thomas Anderson collaboration where DDL (rightly) isn’t and shouldn’t the sole focus of the film. This is Vicky Krieps’ film through and through and I bow at her altar.

The Handmaiden just gets more and more perfect every time I see it. Perverse elegance and elegant perversion. A voyeuristic triptych of love, betrayal, sacrifice, and beauty. I choke up at “My Tamako, My Sookee” every damn time. Acknowledges the male gaze but refuses to indulge it, instead opting to trap it in the Master of the house’s printing press where it belongs.

The Theatrical Version is my preferred version, but the Extended Edition is just so wonderfully indulgent, and smartly saves an early reveal for a much, much better later moment in the plot that furthers the themes of shifting, unreliable perspectives.
