Phantom of the Paradise ★★★★½

An auditory and visual feast, Brian De Palma and Paul Williams do a spectacular job updating the original story and adding so many new things to it. The music is fantastic, the visuals are vibrant, everything about The Phantoms design is incredible, and Williams is an unforgettable villain. The only thing I wasn’t on board with was Phoenix’s turn near the end. I don’t disbelieve that she would make the same Faustian mistake as both Leach and Swan, but it was all done so quickly and made her seem so weak-willed. A few other things were kind of rushed along, but that doesn’t stop this from becoming a new favorite of mine.
