  • Alien: Covenant

    Alien: Covenant

A film that sets out to do two things at once: actually be an Alien movie (the first and third acts) and clean up the leftover plot mess of Prometheus (the middle section of the film).

The "Alien 0" sections work a bit better. Like Prometheus, the production design exploits some sort of weak point in me... I just can't help enjoy looking at the sets, costumes, props, etc. The performances are also good, but the creature CGI often falls…

    August Rush

Two films in one: a shorthand romance (?) story that stacks cliche upon contrivance upon cliche... repeat until your eyes roll out of their sockets. The other is a magical child prodigy story (also full of tropes, as well as a Bono-cosplaying Robin Williams) that is equally poorly written but managed to grow upon me around halfway through.

    The Nice Guys

As one would expect of its pedigree, an expertly, smartly written crime story, with humor that never really misses the mark and never becomes silly enough to lose some sense of stakes or danger.

Now having experienced all the suprising moments and story twists the film offers, I don't believe it's something I'll be revisiting, but not every film can be everything. It accomplishes what it sets out to do extremely well.

  • They Live

    They Live

My first time viewing, knowing the film's reputation and premise, and I came away feeling there was a lot of potential here (mostly missed). The pace begged to be faster, the dialogue begged to snappier, and the film begged for at least a little more money on the screen (intentional B-movie style or not). I was waiting for the fun, CATHARTIC experience I was expecting, and the film DID begin to deliver that... 2/3rds of the way in. I rarely wish for remakes, but I dare you to tackle this story again, studios. Keep the cheese, but add some more bite. Double dog dare.
