Had high expectations for this one with the return of director Justin Lin who helmed three of my fav entries in the series 3, 5 & 6. Save for a semi-interesting climax utilising magnets (more on that later), the series unfortunately jumps the shark (or is it cliff?), taking its stakes to cartoonishly ridiculous levels but not in the OTT, unexpectedly off-the-rails kinda way that's actually fun.

A derivative, mostly cookie-cutter HK police action thriller that runs a little long even at a brisk 88 mins runtime, but gets 4 stars alone for the final climactic showdown between martial arts screen legends Donnie Yen & Collin Chou - aka Seraph from the Matrix trilogy - in one of the greatest, most breathtaking fight scenes in action cinema history.

I REALLY, REALLY LIKED DARK PHOENIX.

    Ok dang I’m in trouble.

First of, a massive improvement over Apocalypse. But also so different compared to any other superhero movies this year. Simon Kinberg really dialed back the CG, focusing less on spectacle & more on intimate, powerful character-driven drama. James McAvoy & Michael Fassbender are splendid as always. Both of them have incredible chemistry & continue to be…
