The Little Things

The Little Things ★★

HBO's first 'major' 2021 release, The Little Things, is a film that feels out of time. The story at hand, maundering dialogue and overall predictability severely hamper the end product and whilst the performances are okay, no one manages to completely stand out and grip me like other crime thrillers have done previously. It’s disappointing to see multiple talented actors like Denzel Washington, Rami Malek, and Jared Leto wasted, given little to nothing to do with the rather straightforward and dissatisfying murder-mystery story, that ultimately creates a film that’s more tiresome than suspenseful throughout. To John Lee Hancock's credit, The Little Things commits to its bummer mood rather well, avoiding an easy resolution in favour of one that acknowledges the messy aftereffects of the case and leaves a lingering effect on the characters that inhabit the world by the time it concludes. However, it's a film that should have been more, but under Hancock's rather lacklustre direction, it feels more pointless, dull and seemingly endless then anything else, with its simplistic and plain nature creating a film that, whilst not dreadful, leaves a lot to be desired.
