Debargo Sanyal is excellent as a trans woman learning to be a parent to the child she didn’t know she fathered, but there’s little else to recommend in this by-the-numbers indie, which strains so hard to be quirky and breezy it gives itself a haemorrhoid.
Two Possible Reviews for Friday the 13th VII: The New Blood (aka Jason vs Carrie):
#1: I wouldn’t say everything about The New Blood is half-assed—most of it is no-assed. Maybe just a sad, lonely crack.
#2: What does one do when one goes to the well and the well is completely dry? If one is the producer of The New Blood, one pisses into the well and then lowers the bucket anyway.
The first half of a visionary mindfuck is stitched to the second half of a (basically unrelated) stylish but standard Nic Cage revenge pic. My star rating is a compromise between the two halves.
Cosmatos would do well to find a better scenarist or return to the minimalism of his first film. Narrative is overrated, but if you’re going to put this much effort into one it needs to be stronger. A mild disappointment.
