the most vapid trash i've seen in a very long time (and i saw the billie holiday movie!!!), pointless and offensive in more ways than i could've expected, anyone who thinks this is "just another formulaic biopic" needs to reconsider just how nefarious this bullshit actually is. aretha was not the first—nor will there ever be a last—Black icon / pioneer / revolutionary to have been disrespected and disregarded by hollywood during their life and this is basically the cinematic equivalent of spitting on her grave. between the horrific disregard for preserving the deep spirituality within her incredible legacy and the unashamed continuation of misconstrued and condescending depictions of Black women's struggles (with mental health, patriarchal manipulation, familial trauma, addiction and whatever else), this is just blindingly terrible and downright evil. it's bad enough that this overlong trite is packed to the brim with the endlessly mindnumbing modern politicization of Black radicals and facile identity politics, they ended this shit with footage from the fucking goddamn kennedy center honors!!! what the hell!!!! everyone involved in this should be ashamed fr just listen to her albums 🤦🏿‍♂️
