i appreciate the smallness of this film, even if the couple of resounding emotional scenes didn't land for me. i can't quite put my finger on why, except, perhaps, that the film's consistent use of close-up wore out my ability to feel big emotions in a real way. instead i found myself appreciating the film from a distance, detaching myself from the arc of the story while mulling over what i did like -- a few of the shots are beautiful, the acting is almost uniformly great (and williams is amazing), and reichardt's willingness to tell a story full of social and political ramifications without ever letting those messages upstage the personal drama. it's a movie i wish i liked more than i do.
