    Julie & Julia

I've had a bad few days, skirting around the truth that I'm at least mildly depressed. Julie and Julia made me cry. Thinking that this was Nora Ephron's last film, a director I hadn't warmed to but...This is why we watch movies.

Insomniac review: a warm bath of a film, wears its two hours lightly. Just look away during the egg scenes if you want to sleep.

    Happiest Season

Highly subjective experience of watching Happiest Season:

    - I had just had a weekend-long coronavirus scare, got my negative result back, and finally got to spend time with my partner. Despite just being in separate rooms for a few days, it was an unpleasant experience. Both our brains were melted, and this seemed like a good choice.

    - This is deeply+profoundly a movie written by and for a late Gen X'er/early Millennial. 15 years ago, this would have felt just…

    Rosamund for Ratchet.

A pity this pivots from its bomb proof central premise, to a tepid mob thriller.
Direction has a bit of zest and elevates a fairly shoddy script (Mesina and Weiss deserve better), but that's squandered in the disappointing later half.

    The World to Come

Really wanted to like this more but the narration, the lighting choice, the conclusion, it really didn't work for me. Plays like a horror film at times, with the idea of centuries of social injustice done to women across the world, but this is delivered via scenes so clearly written by men that it approaches cringe territory.

Insomniac review: trying to fall asleep while spooning my partner...no thanks

    Bringing Out the Dead

"Our Lady of Perpetual Mercy", good joke.

This Scorsese exploration is proving to be fascinating. Hadn't pegged him as a director enthusiastic to interrogate and being in dialogue with his previous films - Taxi Driver, New York New York, After Hours, and the Last Temptation all beg comparison. Not sure how true this is, but Bringing Out the Dead may be the most "Paul Schrader" Scorsese script (and HOW did this not get a Best Adapted Screenplay nom, it's phenomenal),…

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker

Who would have thought Star Wars Episode 9 would be the Game of Thones Season 8 of 2019?

A triumph of corporate brand perpetuation over even a suggestion of artistic merit. Shockingly empty, and seems to relish in weaponizing the symbols of the franchise in hallowing itself out. Kerri Russel has a great voice tho, plus the little hacker boi with her was neat. But I can't help hating everything this film represents. JJ, you made Sith out of me.

Insomniac review: a chain of five (!) mcguffins will finish off any sleepy viewer (JJ you did NOT need to write yourself into that!)
