conspiracy theory: hindi talaga naging zombie 'yung mga zombie sa Block Z, nag-postmortem spasms lang sila
I've said it before and I'll say it again: John Denver Trending is, without a doubt, the most important film of the year so far. Manages to be an advocacy film without being preachy and succumbing to phony sentimentalism. Jansen Magpusao and Meryll Soriano's mother-and-son dynamics provide the film its emotional depth, credited primarily to the actors' raw and heartfelt performances. Brilliant directorial debut, and an even braver critique on the post-truth culture espoused by the Duterte administration.
Never seen a Filipino movie quite like this. Mixes folklore-inspired childlike sensibilities with adult romance; equal amounts magic realism and coming-of-age. Nadine Lustre and Irene Villamor both in their career-best. That "Heto Na Naman" tune will be stuck in my head for a while. One of the films that will make you reaffirm your love for cinema. And that ending! I could probably watch it countless times and still not get tired of it. Salute to all strong women out there!
P.S. This would've been a great double feature with Elise.
