    There is little I've seen in cinema that is more compelling than Joan Crawford's first scene in Johnny Guitar. Every time she is onscreen afterwards, the audience's total attention is directed at her.

    The first film I saw made by Kitano, and one of his unquestionable masterpieces. Here he pursues atmosphere above all else, as this this movie crosses between the sunburnt surreal, slapstick humor, and violence so emotionless and automatic it becomes grim.
    Nobody else captures gun violence like Beat Takeshi, varying between scenes in slow motion that highlight merciless bullets shedding through clothing and purple blood, or extremely casual coverage where the shooters - usually Kitano - are even bored.
