I Spit on Your Grave 2

I Spit on Your Grave 2 ★★★★

This might not be a universally popular opinion, and yes I am, more than anyone, tired of the 'torture-porn' trend but I think that along with the very first SAW and the 2010 remake of ISOYG this sequel is a good film.

The difference between these and such films as Eli Roth's Hostel films, the later SAW sequels, Uwe Boll's Seed and Hidden In The Woods (from Frightfest 2012) etc is that they contain characters that are played well enough that I actually care about them.

Though the victims-turned vigilante's in the two I Spit On Your Grave films are attractive young females as in Hostel etc, the two actresses portraying them both do impressive jobs. This means that though the revenge is grotesque in the vein of films like Hostel I can recognise the point and motivation behind it. This does however mean the preceding rape is equally brutal but appropriate to establish the protagonist's motivation. What this also does is make the audience question how far they would go if they where placed in the central characters shoes.

What makes this a better film than the 2010 remake is the aforementioned performance, some suitably gritty and striking (literally) underground visuals, interesting secondary character including the cop and location and appropriately brutal kills.

To me the way the cop initially does not believe the girls symbolises how society, the real police and justice system often fails rape victims in reality. When he witnesses her retribution at the end it's almost as if she is saying 'Look at what I have had to do for you to believe me'.
