Stunningly good animation and a unique story about the Land of the Dead and Dia de Los Muertos make this a fun family film. The Ice Cube character is totally out of place and adds nothing to it.
The songs are great. The sets are great. The guest stars are fun. But the writing on this one is so bad. Not to say there aren’t funny jokes, but man, for the all the intelligence Stohler and Babon put into the last one, they just pissed all over it with a lazy plot device in which The Muppets - who have been together and love each other and are best friends for 40 years (minus breaks) - don’t recognize…
Cinema verite is great when you know enough about the characters to care about them. This piece was straight fly on the wall but nothing had any semblance of momentum. You could have gone to the bathroom, asked your friend what you missed and for all except once the answer would have been nothing. I much prefer films like Cutie and The Boxer or even Last Chance U which looks at things through a mix of verite and a focused storytelling lens.
This is a fun, breezy watch. The acting is great and supporting roles are welcome. However, if I stopped watching for 15 minutes and came back at any time during the movie, would I have missed anything? The entire venture is inconsequential.
