La Notte

La Notte ★★★★

Regarded as the middle movie of a trilogy which begun with L'Avventura and ended with L'Eclisse, La Notte relates to the demise of warmth and passion between prosperous novelist, Giovanni Pontano (Marcello Mastroianni) and his discontented wife, Lidia (Jeanne Moreau). This time Michelangelo Antonioni compresses the frame with some meticulously constructed compositions and characters who are barely competent in managing to exist together harmoniously. It perhaps leans too heavily into some oblique details at times, but its central theme of isolationism is always emotionally engaging.
