The Green Knight

The Green Knight ★★★★

Bringing various chapters of medieval literature to life, visual storyteller David Lowery has revitalised and enhanced the 14th-century epic poem Sir Gawain and the Green Knight. It follows dissolute youth Gawain (Dev Patel), son of enchantress Morgan le Fay (Sarita Choudhury), facing a series of trials, tribulations and temptations, gradually learning the true nature of chivalry. The spellbinding imagery from Andrew Droz Palermo’s cinematography and Jade Healy’s production design splendidly augment each other. And while Lowery takes some liberties with the source material, which is among the most popular of the Arthurian legends, second only to the quest for the Holy Grail, he also artfully weaves in elements and symbols to create a darkly brooding fantasy.
