Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory

Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory ★★★★½

Jelly beans ripening like wild berries together with a chocolate stream are just some of the extraordinary elements represented in this adaptation of the classic 1964 book by Roald Dahl. It's a combination of fantasy with a pinch of the Brothers Grimm fairy tales that results in a spellbinding mixture of innocence and strangeness. Gene Wilder stars as Willy Wonka, in a performance which is simultaneously warmly captivating as well as bizarrely odd, and the movie accentuates some gorgeous set designs along with some lively and ridiculous songs; it all represents a pleasing sugar-rush fantasy of a movie.
