"We were playing different games."
There aren't enough adjectives in the English dictionary to help describe Yorgos Lanthimos' newest rambunctious feature. The Favourite with its absurdist shocks and obscene screenplay is second to none in 2018, and the trio of leading ladies at the centre provide so much passion, tension and sharp tongued wit that you can't help but roll around in it.
The production design, cinematography, and music practically beg to be watched/heard in the best way you possibly can. And the self contained atmosphere of the palace politics and courtroom manipulation are edgy enough, but it's the gravity Weisz, Stone, and Coleman bring to their characters that make The Favourite an unforgettable piece of work.
This is one of those films that makes you forget about the world outside of the cinema doors.
