Eternals ★★★★

“I’ve watched people destroy each other for centuries, when I could stop it all at the blink of an eye. Do you know what that does to someone? We’ve never interfered for 7,000 years and look where that’s gotten us. Maybe our mission was a mistake.”

Eternals (2021) is being heralded as the worst Marvel movie to date because it’s boring, overloaded, and riddled with too much exposition. And I have to say, this is the most I’ve enjoyed a Marvel movie since Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 (2017).

This is such a thematically rich story with great dialogue, pretty good worldbuilding, an exceptional score from Ramin Djawadi, emotional storytelling, and excellent character work. I don’t want to spoil anything but I think Sersi played by Gemma Chan and Ikaris played by Richard Madden are now some of my favorite characters in the MCU.

The only things I really didn’t like was the strange humor present in the film, but that’s how it is with a lot of Marvel movies. And there’s also some contrived things here and there. And I felt like the film could’ve ended at a certain point maybe 10 minutes before the actual ending and that might’ve been a little bit better for me personally. I felt like the last scene of the film could’ve been one of the post credit scenes instead. Because if the film ended where I wanted it to end, it would’ve been perfect due to how much it mirrors the opening of the film. But that’s it.

Eternals (2021) is a gorgeously shot, beautifully directed film by Chloé Zhao. All the filmmaking elements of this film were great and the writing was mostly solid, which is so rare for the MCU. I thought this film was so damn refreshing from what I’ve come to expect from Marvel. Which is really nice because I know how much of a travesty we are in for when the new Spider-Man film comes out.

I don’t know man, I was really feeling it, I really connected with this film. I don’t agree with the critics on this one. I thought this was one of the best Marvel movies, and way better than a lot of people are giving it credit for.
