To proximity and limitation
Given the progression of the studio's efforts through the years, Pixar's perfunctory spinoff can't quite compare to the superlatives of “Toy Story.” A refined animation doesn't seem to stand up to half-baked plot points and lacklustre side characters. The film had its moments though and got off to a great start before going sideways as it struggled to reach for the stars. Like Buzz finds autopilots annoying, his origin story felt like being narrated by an automated voice (the irony). Although he grew fond of them halfway.
Lightyear (2022), albeit provides an emotionally human Buzz arc, loses a sense of direction after achieving takeoff, but for something geared to younger audiences—fun enough. It's no wonder Sox the robotic cat was the highlight.
