Freyr’s review published on Letterboxd:
Amusingly this is a drastically different film from the latest Godzilla film from the US, but I think it's excellent in its own way. The drama unfolds largely through the tangled web of bureaucracy in Japan, which isn't to say there isn't some fantastic Godzilla action, but there are long stretches where the only action on screen is a room full of suits talking among themselves, or doing intensive planning and research. Anno is a fantastic director, and gives these sequences the weight they require to be as compelling as the military assaults themselves. The effects for Godzilla are fantastic, and his design is powerful and intimidating. The score is great as well, with a variety of cuts, to include a great remix of a prominent Evangelion theme, which is always a welcome call back.
