Spiral: From the Book of Saw

Spiral: From the Book of Saw ★★★½

I've returned to the theater! I'm still a bit antsy about it, so I waited a while to go see this (and I plan on waiting for crowds to die down on the likes of A Quiet Place Part II before seeing that). This was a fun first go back though; it's schlocky, melodramatic, and full of questionable logic: just like all the best Saw films!

The traps are brutal, and it was honestly refreshing to get away from the contrivances of having to relate Jigsaw to everything despite being out of the picture for ages. A new, contained story and cast of characters, and I think it's solid. Not flawless, but entertaining in all the ways I wanted, and very committed to the aesthetic that got us here. The big twist was super obvious this go around, and something I wish they'd tightened up, but I still got excited when I heard the theme kick in.
