I don't know... Maybe I just wasn't in the right mood or headspace? It just feels like the main focus is on the atmosphere of living in Japan, which the gorgeous animation beautifully realizes. But then the main point of the story kicks in in the back half and I kind of wished they had been telling this story more earnestly from the start, because it is a great story with some excellent themes. I just wasn't really vibing with the lackadaisical approach I guess.
This was an excellent little Gangster Mystery and I'm bummed I missed it in theaters. The story is excellent and they use their contained setting extremely well. The performances are fantastic, as is the direction and production design. I genuinely had no idea where the plot was going and each new twist was a really exciting development.
It's frustrating that no one has shown up for this. Ridley Scott is out here at the age of 83, knocking out home runs with ease, and everyone seems to just shrug. Easily the best of the Iron Man movies. From the comedy to the story to the action, this one nails it all. It's also a brilliant continuation of Tony's character arc in the MCU.
