Coming Home

Coming Home ★★★★

A very westernized telling of a cultural-revolution-centric story. Here, Yimou goes back to his roots, in terms of subject matter, but incorporates some modern plot devises and technical elements to create a genuinely engaging narrative for both American and Chinese audiences to appreciate. It never quite reaches the same level of expertise as To Live or Raise the Red Lantern, but it's definitely a substantial step towards it.
