Hayden Welch’s review published on Letterboxd:
“In life, there are times to be quiet, to shut the fuck up. This is one of those times.”
Once you get accustomed to Spike Lee’s vignette approach to this eccentric racially charged comedy it works on a whole other plane. While utilizing a cast of familiar players Spike Lee bottles this electricity of life and energy found in people within this dormitory setting. School Daze is the ultimate hangout film, yet it elevates above that as it actually has this thematic relevance that extends outside the typical coming of age realm. One aspect Spike always purely capitalizes on is atmosphere; he always has a firm grasp of the world he creates and the odd and emblematic characters that inhabit them.
