Hayden Welch’s review published on Letterboxd:
“Satan is ever ready to seduce us with sensual delights.”
Really hope this gets a new restoration soon because it’s a real treat. Ken Russell’s The Devils is a breakneck and striking pace with a deeply faithful thematic resonance all wrapped up in a compelling plot. The Devils is really quite the immersive portrait. I loved the timely but not overly convoluted dialogue and the interwoven character dynamics. The look at sexual repression was most easily the most interesting and unexpected look.
Oliver Reed’s Urbain Grandier is such a and interesting and memorable character. He really elevated every scene he was in and made the dynamics within the nunnery more fresh. My only complaint is that it felt it was building up to something grander and I’d love for the film to be another half-hour linger; other than that this was stunning.
