Hey Fella’s review published on Letterboxd:
Haven’t seen any early Burton since I was like 7. This has always felt like a weird choice for his first film but also sort of a perfectly fitting one. Some of the funniest stuff in this is not even the gags or Pee Wee’s silly voices but just when he looks at someone with a disgusted look on his face and says something dismissive. Besides that it’s a whole bunch of subtle little things that add up to making this hilarious. From his short film Vincent to Sleepy Hollow he had a great run as a filmmaker. Big Fish, Sweeney Todd, and his animated rendition of Frankenweenie stand out as little returns to form here and there but sadly I don’t see him reaching the heights of Batman Returns or Ed Wood ever again.
