So I came up with a with a way of rating films within a given category like genre, director, year of release etc.
It’s called ‘best, most, favourite’ - it’s a way of trying to wrangle my subjective/objective film instincts
‘Best’ is meant to be like a directors finest work of filmmaking or the simply the best film a genre produced - it’s the most objective of the categories, you’re meant to step out of you subjective POV and view a movie as the average observer

‘Most’ is like the film that exemplifies the category and what that category is *meant* to achieve - it’s a little more subjective than Best but still reasonably objective in viewing a film by the sum of its parts
‘Favourite’ is pretty self explanatory: it’s the film that you love from the category almost inexplicably. It just speaks to you for some reason.
An important aspect of the system is that one film could fit with one or all of Best, Most and Favourite. If a film in an actor’s or editor’s or screenwriter’s (what have you) filmography that you see is their best and most exemplory work that you love inexplicably, it fits all of them! Well Done!
I’ve given an example in this list, my take on Wes Anderson; it’s an easy category for me.
(Wes anderson isn’t really my favourite director just an easy one to analyse)
