Hot Take Nick’s review published on Letterboxd:
I’d say this better win the Oscar for sound design but the academy will probably mess that up too.
Never could I begin to fathom what it’s truly like to experience being deaf. But the combination of sound design like I’ve never heard before and Riz Ahmed’s powerful performance makes this feel like a film that gets as close as a film possibly can to putting you in the world of someone who is deaf.
The choice not to caption the sign language early on in Ruben’s hearing loss is another step this movie takes to force the viewer to try to experience at least a fraction of the unknown that deaf people face. A beautiful choice.
And that gut-punch ending. I mean talk about absolutely nailing the landing.
