A mammoth, towering, and cathartic achievement about how man survives and how he dies. Brando’s portrayal of Kurtz as an omnipresent God who’s being destroyed by his own creation is haunting, and Duvall’s Lt Col Kilgore is a full throttle force of nature - moving the needle from compassion to selfishness in the blink of an eye.
The technical scope of this film is perfect. The dense and inventive sound, the stark and gorgeous photography, and the hypnotic editing all astound.
