Hugh Guiney’s review published on Letterboxd:
Two weeks ago I got drunk and tried to watch “Under the Skin” but stopped ⅛ of the way though after falling asleep. Last night I got drunk and tried to watch “Under the Skin”, starting from the beginning, but stopped ¼ of the way though after falling asleep. Finally finished it just now.
The verdict: Wanted more plot-wise but still a strong example of being mood-forward without being overly experimental, à la “Drive”. A refreshingly minimalist sci-fi—SFX supports rather than leads; ScarJo sells herself as an alien through physicality and emoting. As a viewer the style is immersive, feeling less like a fantasy and more like a fly-on-the-wall documentary. As a filmmaker the style is inspiring for what can be achieved with smaller budgets.
