i wasn't expecting to be handing out 5 stars to films this early on but here we are. wow. this movie is everything and more. every shot was like an oil painting in itself, and i found myself immediately mesmerized and drawn into this world. sciamma and her dp have achieved a visual masterpiece that will be hard to top this year. the way the film also utilizes the female gaze and portrays relationships between women is extremely special, and marianne and héloïse are one of my new favourite cinematic romances (the bittersweet ending of la la land has met its match). the way it blurs the lines between memory and the present at times is fascinating, and i also love a good slow burn (literally). the bonfire scene was both enchanting and chilling, and will go down as one of the best of the year.
