This reminds me of how American Beauty is such a quaint pre-9/11, end-of-history moment. This is a lot better than American Beauty, but it has that same quality where it galvanizes the past in such a profound way right before this massive tipping point. There's pre-Weiner, where we go after any semblance of wrong-doing, and post-Weiner our cultural standards, collectively, are a lot more circumstantial. And I think you can find the same deeper truth running on both sides, but it's nice to think there was a time where we weren't so desperate that we'd let anyone who kind assuaged our anxieties have cartoonish amounts of power.
