  • The Oath

    The Oath

    ★★★★

When a politically charged dark comedy makes you feel more anxious than most horror movies you’ve ever seen.

  • A Simple Favor

    A Simple Favor

    ★★★★

When a film feels like a dark comedy version of Gone Girl, and devises a compelling mystery that keeps you engaged, mostly through the performance of Blake Lively, but loses some steam in the third act feeling a bit scattered.

  • Bodied

    Bodied

    ★★★½

When a film effectively explores prejudice, boundaries, and what is considered to be off-limits within the context of art through the lens of battle rap, but tends to overstay its welcome with an excessively long run time.

  • Bird Box

    Bird Box

    ★★★½

When the first 20 minutes of a film are really strong and sets the tone for an acceptable and serviceable thriller that explores interesting themes about motherhood, is paced well, and features a strong performance by Sandra Bullock and a great ensemble cast.

This is film #19 in my 52 Films Directed by Women project.

  • Aquaman

    Aquaman

    ★★★

When a film strays completely from the tone of previous films in the DC Extended Universe by delivering more "fun and goofiness", but overall feels bloated due to an unnecessary Black Manta subplot, and an eventual third act reminiscent of every other comic book adaptation.

    Rough Night

When a film features a solid cast, but unfortunately you don’t find even one character likeable.

  • The Equalizer 2

    The Equalizer 2

    ★★★

When you're excited for a sequel because you really enjoyed its predecessor, but find yourself disappointed with how the film doesn't follow the path that the original seemed to set up, instead deciding to delve into the history of Robert McCall, which essentially removes the mystery surrounding his character that made him interesting in the first place.

    Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse

    ★★★★★

When a super-hero film captures the feeling of reading a comic book more than any other super-hero film ever has, and does it while telling a great story featuring a diverse cast, a killer soundtrack, a unique animation style, and effective 3D.

    Creed II

    ★★★½

When a sequel doesn’t hit on the same level as its predecessor and feels underwhelming, but does deliver a decent addition to the franchise featuring strong performances, interesting characters, and antagonists with depth that invoke empathy from the audience.
