The Panic in Needle Park

The Panic in Needle Park ★★★★

"The Panic in Needle Park" hit theaters just two years after "Midnight Cowboy," but—as gritty as that film may have seemed—"Panic" feels as though it arrived from a different film industry entirely. Stripped of any score and allowed to unfold in cinema vérité fashion, and written by Joan Didion and husband John Gregory Dunne, the film is imbued with Didion's prose style: almost unbearably bleak, yet not at all ostentatious about it.
