Manhattan 1979
The best (and worst) of Woody. No doubt, a blatant envisioning of a particular reality on the margins of society in 1979. Cringeworthy when viewed today. I hate to say it, but I’ve always appreciated Woody as a writer. Not only for his unyielding production rate, but how he is able to craft a meandering yet deliberate story free from any ‘misunderstanding’ or ‘wrong place/wrong time’ motifs. There is honest emotion in Manhattan. Of course, in this case, that same honesty is a window into the abhorrent.

No. I don’t want a mini-series.
Strap me to the theater seat and demand unwavering patience.
Sure, postulate a few hypothetical branching realities…
But get me to the Green Chapel for eventual ‘resolution’ at hour 8.
I cannot be more adamant about the 8…

I didn’t want it to end and when it did I begged myself to revisit the ‘Unknown’. Full disclosure: I’m a sucker for a fantastical linear epic but OTGW takes this paradigm to unbelievable levels of depth and world-building in its limited runtime.
Think Pilgrim’s Progress but replace religious salvation with self-actualized disorientation (and add whimsy).
