the homeless rockstar of palo alto’s review published on Letterboxd:
Probably the most layered noir you can get. A personal introspective on various characters and the filmmaker, a broad depiction of the functionalities of a corrupt society, and it's stylistically rich but never to the point of indulgence. Instead, Polanski and Towne throw us deeper and deeper into evil and corruption under the facade of the normal world. There are heavy references to the classic film noir only CHINATOWN is actually devoted to getting to the truth of something. An intricate and fascinating film punctuated with one of the most devastating realities of our world. What a picture.
