A feast for the whole family!

I have a really big soft spot for this little Christmas horror film. It’s not without its faults (I wish the lighting was a little moodier and some wrinkles in the dialogue had been smoothed out, particularly for Olivia DeJonge’s character), but it has a lovely modern Christmas feel with just enough twists to keep you entertained. Does it become a tad predictable? Probably. Are terribly cliché traits presented by the babysitter? Yes. But…

Iconic, but not without its flaws. You’d be forgiven for thinking this was some sort of police procedural made-for-television movie in parts, but it most certainly isn’t. The film that popularised (though didn’t invent) the infamous “the call is coming from inside the house” line, sending chills down moviegoers spines for decades, really turns out to be a bit of a meandering mess throughout its middle act. Beautifully directed, and a true under-appreciated gem from recent years. I’d even rate it as Blumhouse’s best film. Admittedly, I love the grittiness of the original, and I do have a fondness for the creepy, masked…

I’m really not too sure what to say about this film. It’s strong, has compelling performances from pretty much every actor in it, is dark and creepy, but something about the plot and storyline just didn’t feel “finished”. It feels a lot like the penultimate draft of the film, and they decided to just go ahead and shoot with that. Thoroughly enjoyable and dizzying; I just wanted more.
