Day of the Outlaw

Day of the Outlaw ★★★½

André De Toth pushes the typically warm and dusty western genre to new and relentlessly cold depths in this rather bitter criss-cross of impending range war and outlaw takeover. Craggy-faced Robert Ryan compellingly leads as a rancher about to commit cold blooded murder against a homesteader (Alan Marshal) who just so happens to be the husband of his girlfriend (Tina Louise). Sounds rather villainous, but in rides a wounded Burl Ives and his horny band of hooligans into the aptly named town of Bitters, Wyoming, and new tensions lead Ryan on a frigid path to hell and ultimate redemption in one of the starkest, meanest and compelling climaxes in the entire western genre.
