Charlie Chua’s review published on Letterboxd:
This 5th season of Black Mirror continues to disappoint with this shitstorm. Pains me to say it, but this is the first time I’ve outright hated a Black Mirror episode. Easily the weakest episode to date.
No style. No substance. Doesn’t even have an interesting message. I get the sense that Miley Cyrus asked if she could be in an episode, and Charlie Brooker complied in the worst way possible.
There’s hardly anything redeemable here. The comedy didn’t work at all. Certain plot points made ZERO sense. Furthermore, some subplots just don’t get a payoff to their set up. Also, everyone is so goddamn unlikeable in this. Their lacklustre acting doesn’t help either. This really feels like a Black Mirror parody.
The thought of Charlie Brooker, the mind behind fantastic episodes like “The National Anthem” and “Be Right Back”, putting pen to paper to create THIS, disgusts me.
Also, why does Miley Cyrus sound like a chainsmoker?
