    ★★½

There’s probably a really solid two hour film in here, but I found the true length to be very self indulgent. Yeah, it has a plot, but it’s very thin and doesn’t support three hours. A LOT of unnecessary repetition here. It’s a malick film, so it’s obviously gorgeous, but he really needs to stop getting in his own way.

Feels like a video game, the narrative is structured as a linear mission in which dangerous obstacles lay around every corner, though in this case I think that sensation added to the film. It’s more of a technical showcase than something with nuanced observations on the horrors of war, or any real characters, but the “one take” style makes it a tense and engaging watch. Deakins flexes hard and that alone makes this all worth it.

Also, few things annoy me more than when films know they have no real ideas so they go…

The safdies have struck again, and in an even more momentous fashion than any prior time in their short but electrifying careers. The story is simple, a gambling addict continually tries to hustle his way out of the hole he’s dug himself into while simultaneously making it deeper. The power is all in the presentation and the safdies again prove themselves to be masters of controlled chaos. They’re also experts at bringing both professionals and non actors together and organically…
