Is this a reference to modern day?
I was throughly confused this whole movie, I really couldn't say exactly what was happening throughout the whole movie except bits and pieces. It was very different then what I would watch by choice and it sure was an experience. Although I didn't particularly enjoy this movie, I liked how it incorporated the LGBTQ+ community in African culture because as an African person I know it's not always excepted so for them to have a the main protagonist as a trans woman was nice.
I believe this is a reference to modern day because this takes place in Africa and that is where the world today gets their Tantalum to make technology by mining in Africa to be more specific forcing africans to mine for other countries and paying little to nothing with dangerous work conditions. This goes back to the movie because it is said that they had to mine for food and board for extensive hours and when asked why they were mining they were told they were mining "technology". Going back to the modern day mining of tantalum.
In this movie it also references how important technology is and how the government governing technology too much is most likely not the best option. In the movie the government in charge takes the radio, tv's, wifi, and technology in general leaving the citizens clueless on whats really going on. This was a dangerous thing and lead to people going out on the streets protesting then leading to dangerous situations.
In the movie the other protagonist comes for thee rich he recites a song saying "fuck Mr. Google" at the end of it after naming all the wrongs in the miners lives while "Mr. Google" is benefiting off if their suffrage. These group of people realize they are getting exploited by these big organizations and want to find a way to get back at these big corporations but there is not much they can do.
In conclusion although I didn't really enjoy the movie it referenced and brought to light a lot of problems the world is facing today like forced mining in Africa, or governments taking away technology to extents from their citizens. This movie will definitely leave you thinking about a lot of things.
