I, Tonya ★★★

An ambitious, sometimes entertaining take on the iconic, scandal-ridden figure skater. Maybe overly ambitious, as I'm not sure Gillespie quite pulled off what he was going for here. It's tone and structure were all over the place, but the stuff that worked were very good. Margot Robbie as the titular character is an interesting performance. I enjoyed it when I try to ignore she was trying to play Tonya Harding. I liked what she was doing, her comic timing is very good, but she never really convinced me she was Tonya. Which probably indicates the performance wasn't a success, but one of the few unsuccessful performances I still enjoyed. Allison Janney is very funny as her monster of a mother. It's a one-note performance, but it's an entertaining note. So, overall, I liked it, but it could've been so much more.
