While Ernest Rides Again is like some Italian Neo-Realist bullshit. This is the French Tati comedy bullshit Ernest. They had a football Ernest script and a school one and someone dropped the loose pages together
Smart Ernest is an asshole.
I appreciate that while they forgot to let Ernest know about a GED , but no one wants to watch Ernest sit in adult education classes, they did keep Ernest’s love interest age appropriate because this could’ve slipped into some Ernest / Paterno hellscape.
Ernest goes inside his locker to masturbate was 100% the school rumour.
I started watching this with the gang but then had to leave to record a podcast. But what I had seen had me hooked so I decided to watch the rest of it on my own and I NEVER would’ve thought I’d ever say that about an Ernest movie. I will now be watching every single Ernest movie ever made… eventually.
*Ernest walks up to the front of the class*
“…America.”
*band plays perfectly*
There's some light sub-sub-sub Stephen Chow energy at times, but the concept of Jim Varney doing his own THE NUTTY PROFESSOR is never truly developed. Super smart Ernest is a bit of a snob, but he doesn't become the egomaniac that the script needs to create conflict. Not enough Will Sasso.
This was one that I didn’t actually like much when I was a kid. Today, my opinion remains unchanged.
This is probably my least favorite of Varney's legitimate Ernest flicks, as many of his earlier theatrical releases were hands down better. Maybe if I was a football fan I could appreciate this one more, not that the football game in this one is anything serious.

Mad TV's Will Sasso is in this, credited as "William Sasso." Well la-di-da, Mr. Fancy Pants.
My daughter Selina asked for more Ernest so it's time for number six which is progressively cheaper with much smaller setpieces.
Nonetheless it's still entertaining because of Jim Varney's talents to elevate even the lowest of production values. There's the usual slapstick with Ernest working as a janitor in high school.
When the mayor plans to close the school because every employee of the school needs to graduate, Ernest is forced to study for a high school diploma. A very hard task indeed... but the chemistry teacher and his assistant Bobby, the return of Bill Byrge, create a device that's able to turn Ernest into a genius. A device giving Jim Varney some room to do multiple characters.
It's not…
