It took me a while to be truly immersed in the world building and the unlikely heroes we follow but by the time the story reached its final destination I was completely entranced. Set in a post apocalyptic world (or is it?), Bouli Lanners tells a beautifully simple yet thought provoking story of a couple of wandering souls who are each in their own way struggling with themselves, their past and their inevitable future. Told in a darkly comic way, it's an age old rumination on life and death and about making the right choices even though you haven't done so in the past. Life, death, comedy and tragedy collide in another great film from possibly my favourite Belgian filmmaker.
Kosmorama film #4
The Letterboxd plot summary: "Apocalyptic neo-western about two gangsters, a town full of crazy people and Jesus…" Do I really need to sell this one?
Beautiful cinematography can't save this pre-Apocalyptic tale. This had a lot of potential though with some great, absurdist atmosphere but the Western shtick felt off. Also, the story is so loose that you can't help imagining a more interesting film. Just realized that the Max von Sydow lookalike...really was Max von Sydow. Weird.
Les Premiers Les Derniers is part of an interesting new wave of Belgian Noir. I was introduced to Belgian Neo Noir by watching the gloomy La Trêve series (a.k.a. The Break), which I liked a lot.
I'm less enthusiastic about Les Premiers Les Derniers than I am about La Trêve though. I liked the fatalistic, apocalyptic atmosphere in Les Premiers Les Derniers, effectively making use of the desolate rural landscape of Wallonia. Like La Trêve, Les Premiers Les Derniers also has its pleasant share of odd outcast characters, and the cinematography establishes a darkly poetic mood.
My major complaint about Les Premiers Les Derniers is that the plot feels a little lost. The unfolding events carry a sense of randomness,…
Film Nr.38 im Kinojahr 2017 (Sneak Preview)
Puh...
refreshing to see a movie that actually turns out not to be the usual cynical, hopeless, "oh, aren't human beings cruel"-type of movie despite it having the setting and cinematography of one such film
